What is Depression?

At some point in life, most people will experience periods of feeling sad, blue, or down in the dumps. How can a person tell if what they are experiencing is just a passing phase or if they have true clinical depression? What actually causes depression? And what treatment options are available for people suffering from depression?What is Depression?

 

While everyone experiences sadness and feelings of misery, these feelings are usually temporary, lasting anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. True clinical depression is a medical condition that affects one’s moods, thoughts, feelings, behavior, and physical health over a long period of time. People suffering from depression often have recurrent episodes. For this reason, if you suspect that you may be suffering from depression, it is a good idea to schedule an appointment with your doctor to discuss your symptoms. If you experience a loss of interest in daily activities, have feelings of hopelessness, sudden weight or appetite changes, you may be suffering from depression.

 

It is unknown if there is an exact cause of depression. It is believed that depression is caused by a combination of factors such as: genetics, faulty mood regulation, stressful life events, temperament, social environment, and seasonal changes. And while the reasons that people suffer from depression may vary, the good news is that there are a variety of treatment options available.

 

Common treatment options include a combination of talk therapy with medication for depression. If you find that one antidepressant doesn’t work well for you, ask your doctor to try another. Relief from depression varies from person to person. What works well for one person, may not work so well for another. Natural treatment options are also a great way for you to get involved with your treatment. If you are depressed, it is important for you to get back into a daily routine. Structuring your day can help you get back on track. A healthy diet, regular exercise, and a good night’s rest can all provide a boost to your mental health. It is also important to not isolate yourself. Time with friends and family can be very beneficial.

 

Depression can be an up and down journey. The important thing to remember is that you are not alone and help is available. And while there is no quick fix, with a little bit effort and patience, you can fight back against depression.
