Benefits of Exercise
The positive effects of exercise have been well-documented. These effects reach far beyond one’s physical well-being, however. Regular exercise can have a signifcant impact on one’s mental clarity and function as well as one’s attitude. Exercise should play an integral role in everyone’s life.
Regular physical exercise can have an enormous effect on the human body. When most people think of exercise and how it affects the body, the notion of weight loss and physical appearance typically comes to mind. Exercise certainly does have a direct effect on one’s body and the ability to control weight. In addition, regular exercise can help one preserve or add muscle mass. When it comes to body composition, proper diet and regular exercise are the keys to not only looking good but also feeling good.
While appearances are important to everyone, exercise can have a drastic impact on almost every underlying marker of physical health. Exercise can help regulate such bodily functions as sleep, eating and respiration. Exercise improves such things as insulin sensitivity, hormones that control appetite and inflammation markers. The list of physical benefits from regular exercise is a lengthy one indeed!
On the flip side of the coin, exercise can have a huge effect on one’s stress levels and mental well-being. Exercise releases a number of “feel good” chemicals including endorphins. These endorphins can elicit what is commonly referred to as a “runner’s high.” While exercise can cause the body to release certain chemicals and hormones, it can also cause levels of certain chemicals to drop. Cortisol, otherwise known as the “stress hormone,” is a great example. Cortisol is needed by the body but too much can lead to problems such as weight gain. Consistent exercise can help one regulate levels of this hormone for optimal performance.
As if all of the key bodily processes affected by exercise were not enough, exercise also gives one a great sense of accomplishment. Just ask anyone who works out first thing upon waking. A good bout of exercise in any form will leave one feeling relaxed, refreshed and wanting more. One will find that they are able to accomplish more during the day when exercise is a part of their daily routine. In addition, they will get a better night’s sleep for their efforts.
The sheer number of benefits provided by exercise is too long to list. By starting a regular exercise routine, however, one will begin to enjoy some of the many benefits right away.
